About Nathaniel Blackiston

Colonel Nathaniel Blakiston was the 8th Royal Governor of Maryland from 1698 to 1702. He succeeded Francis Nicholson and was succeeded by Thomas Tench. He was related to Nehemiah Blakiston.

The grandson of John Blakiston, regicide Member for Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the Long Parliament, Blakiston served in the army in the West Indies, becoming lieutenant-governor of Montserrat with the acting rank of colonel. Appointed governor of Maryland in 1698, he retired on grounds of health in 1701, receiving the thanks of the court of delegates who appointed him their agent in London. From 1706 onwards he served as agent for Virginia in London at a salary of £300 p.a. Returned for Mitchell as a Whig in 1715, he voted with the Administration in every recorded division, dying towards the end of February 1722. His will was proved 5 Mar. 1722.
