About Philip Perry Brown, Jr.

Col. Philip P. Brown, Jr.

Brown, a former resident of Hamilton, who raised and commanded the 157th Regiment of N.Y. Volunteers in the late civil war, died at St. Louis, Mo., of typhoid pneumonia in the 58th year of his age. Col. Brown was a native of Smithfield, in this county. He entered Madison University in 1853, and graduated in 1855. After his graduation he filled the position of principal of the Academy of the University from 1855 to 1862, when he entered the army as Colonel of the 157th Regiment of N.Y. Volunteers. From 1865 till 1866 he was Colonel of the 7th U.S. Veteran Volunteers of Hancock's Corps. In 1866 he left the army, and established himself in an extensive business in St. Louis, his residence at the time he died.
