He received a good education and held many offices; he was sub-sheriff of Albemarle county in 1751; captain of a company of the militia of Albemarle. He was also a burgess for Albemarle county in 1758-1761. When Amherst county was formed, in 1761, he held all the leading offices. He was president of the county court, coroner, surveyor, vestryman, county lieutenant, and from 1761 to 1775 was a burgess. He also represented Amherst in the conventions of 1775 and 1776. He was, moreover, a member of the public committee of safety. During the revolution he was state senator; after it was over, a member of the constitutional convention of 1788.
