About Thomas Lowndes

Thomas Lowndes was the son of Rawlins Lowndes, former Governor of South Carolina during the Revolution. He was born January 22, 1766 in Charleston, South Carolina, and died July 8, 1843 in Charleston. He married Sarah Bond l'On, daughter of Jacob Bond and wife Mary Ashby l'On. He maintained a large plantation outside Charleston, known as Oaklands

Thomas studied law and in 1789 was admitted to the bar in South Carolina. He initially spent more time in his planting pursuits involving his vast land holdings. His first public service began with his election to the South Carolina House from St. Philips and St. Michael parish. He would serve in the House through the 12th, and 13th General Assemblies which ended in 1799. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives for the Charleston District in 1801 and served in the 7th and 8th Congresses which ended in 1805. He decided not to seek re-election but, changing his mind, again became a candidate in 1808. He was defeated in this attempt. As a result he would spend the majority of his time in civic duties including the Charleston Library Society, president of the board of trustees of the College of Charleston and commissioner of the Charleston Orphan House.

  • Rawlins Lowndes, born may 28, 1798 and died October 1800.
  • Mary l'On Lowndes, born August 1, 1800 and died c.1865. Married Frederick Rudledge Kinloch (1791-1856) in 1816. At least 3 children.
  • Rawlins Lowndes, born September 1, 1801 and named for his dead brother. Married Gertrude Laura LIvingston, five children known.
  • Thomas Lowndes, born in 1803 in New Haven, Connecticut.
  • Jacob l'On Lowndes, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1804 and died, unmarried, on February 7, 1829.
  • William Price Lowndes, born September 21, 1806. Married Susan Mary Elizabeth Livingston in 1835. Three known children.
  • Charles Tidyman Lowndes, 1808-1884, married Sabina Elliott Huger and had six children.
  • Edward Tidyman Lowndes, born in 1810 and died in 1837. Buried in July 1837 in Georgetown, South Carolina.
  • Harriet Lowndes, 1812-1892, married William Aiken
  • Caroline Huger Lowndes, born September 15, 1813 and died September 8, 1817.
  • Richard Henry Lowndes, 1815-1905, married Susan Middleton Parker. Four known children.
