During America's Revolutionary War, Jesse Root (1736 - 1822) served as a Lieutenant Colonel and Adjutant General in the Continental Army for CONNECTICUT. In 1778 he was elected to the Second Continental Congress and served until 1782. DAR Ancestor # A097440

In 1756, he graduated from Princeton College, was ordained as a minister and preached from 1758 to 1763. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Hartford, Connecticut in 1763. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel and Adjutant General in the Continental Army. In 1778 he was elected to the Second Continental Congress and served until 1782. In 1785, he was appointed Connecticut State Attorney, appointed a judge of the superior court in 1789 and served as Chief Justice from 1796 to 1807. From 1807 to 1809, he was a member of the State House of Representatives and a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1818.

Jesse Root (December 28, 1736– March 29, 1822) was an American minister and lawyer from Coventry, Connecticut. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress for Connecticut from 1778 until 1782, and sat as chief justice of the state's Supreme Court from 1796 to 1807.

General Jesse ROOT Sr. was born on 28 Dec 1736 in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.10,11,36

From the Richard Ripley Research: "In a chapter entitled 'Lawyers, originally preachers,' Clark mentions Jesse Root, son of Ebenezer (446?) and Sarah Strong Root (grandson of Thomas Sr.): born 1736; P.C. 1756; studied law, admitted to practice 1763, and settled in Hartford. Member of the Continental Congress, 1778-83. Judge of the Superior Court 1789, Chief Justice of Conn. 1796-1807. Colonel in Revolutionary War, adjutant general. An 'eminent Christian, a pillar in the church. Even to the last he attended the prayer meeting.' Died 1822, aged 85."

He appeared in the census in 1810 in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.57 His household consisted of 1 male, age 45 and over (Jesse, 74); 1 female, age 10 through 15; 1 female, age 26 through 44; and 2 females, age 45 and over (one of which was probably his wife, Mary, 78). He served in the military about 1812.10 He served in the Continental Army. He died on 29 Mar 1822 in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.10,11,36

General Jesse ROOT Sr. and Ruth Mary BANKS were married on 13 May 1758 in Newark, Essex County, NJ.10,11 Ruth Mary BANKS (daughter of Thomas BANKS and Sarah OSBORNE) was born on 12 Apr 1736 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, CT.10 She died on 5 Dec 1813 in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.10,11 General Jesse ROOT Sr. and Ruth Mary BANKS had the following children:
