Egmond coat of armsThe Egmond or Egmont family is named after Dutch town of Egmond and played an important role in the Netherlands during the Middle Ages. The family also had a link with Buren. The family rose to power due to its hereditary position as guardians of the powerful Egmond abbey in South Holland, which was destroyed during the beeldenstorm in the Reformation. in the late 15th century, one branch became dukes of Guelders.
Eventually the family died out in the 17th century.
