He came to America through Pennsylvania, and then to Guilford Courthouse, NC. After the Revolutionary War, he moved to Georgia, settling in Elbert, County. He served as a corporal of artillery in North Carolina.

John is in high profile in the Guilford Co. records but was within that part that went into Rockingham Co. in 1786. He is identified as a builder of a bridge, for example. The family was in Elbert Co., GA by 1805 and when new lands were opened in Alabama, they moved to St. Clair, Co., AL. He had served in the Revolution, as a corporal of artillery in North Carolina.
