About Thomas Talmadge (Talmage), 6

Thomas, Jr., pushed on with ten others still further westward and founded in 1649, the town of East Hampton, first called "Maidstone."3

=================================

He with seven others founded the town of Easthampton in 1649 and lived there the rest of his life. He as elected the first recorder and secretary a position he held for many years, alternating the exercise of the office with a Benjamin Price. He was the recorder at time of his death. The Chronicles of Easthampton states that judging from his handwriting and orthography, he must have had a very good education for that period.

Thomas Jr. was the richest man in Easthampton at the time of his death. When He made his will in 1687 Elizabeth was living and it is probably she to whom the Rev. Nathaniel Hunting refers when he records the death of Mrs Talmage as of 5/20/1704,

He had eight children of whom Nathaniel perhaps named for Mr. Hunting, was the eldest.

Thomas Talmage, jr. This is thought to be the same Lieut. Talmage, of New Haven, who

was killed in the savage attack on Schenectady, 8 Feb., 1690, though he must then have

been ripe in years.]

========================================

In the year 1650 a General Court was ordained in East Hampton, composed of the whole assembled people, and Thomas Talmage, Jr., was chosen "First Recorder" on the third of October.4 Prior to that date he had married Elizabeth Bancroft, doubtless a daughter of John Bancroft, who was among the followers of Winthrop and who had settled at Lynn. Thomas Talmage was appointed Lieutenant in 1665 and, later, Captain of the Train Band, which was the highest office socially in the community and which conveyed with it the "seat of honor" at the church. Captain Talmage seems to have been a man of considerable means, for, in 1690, he was assessed on property far in excess of all others. He died in 1690 or 1691, as shown by the probation of his will, leaving three sons, only one of whom had issue, Nathaniel.
