As a teenager Cherokee Bill liked to drink and carouse. He shot his first man after a fistfight at a dance in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, in 1894. During the next few months Cherokee Bill killed an officer then shot his brother-in-law to death for beating his wife, Bill's sister. While looting a depot Cherokee Bill killed the station agent, a conductor who tried to throw him off a train, and a bystander. Arrested while visiting a sweetheart, Cherokee Bill was tried and sentenced to hang. He killed a guard during an attempted jailbreak. On the gallows Cherokee Bill was asked if he had any remarks and he replied, "No, I came here to die, not make a speech."
