Harriet Mathilda was married at the Anglican church, Grahamstown on 13.03.1838 to David Paxton (brother of Henry Paxton who married Harriet's sister, Mary Sussana). David ran a confectionery shop in High Street in the town, and, during the frontier war of 1846-47, he served in the Grahamstown Yeomanry. in 1849, the couple moved to Port Elizabeth and a year or two later, to Bloemfontein. After the abandonment of the Orange Free State in 1853, the family returned to Somerset East where David was a baker and confectioner. He died there on 16.09.1876
