About David Sanes (Schames)

David emigrated, leaving from Hamburg, Germany, to the United States on the ship "Reliance". He arrived in America on June 9, 1925 (at the age of 19) at the Port of New York.

From Marsha (Sanes) Shrager:

He loved America and especially america with his whole heart and soul. He had a thick accent. Never talked about his family or his families home. He lit candles to remember his Mother, father, brothers and sisters. He escaped Hitler! But not the pogroms. He was considered a "rabbi" why I don't know----but he he knew hebrew very, very well as well as kiddish. He was hard working, very empathic with people and he loved talking!!!! He loved pinnackle(sp). He called my Mom daily when he was at Westinghouse working. He loved to tease people and was pretty astute and intelligent. He always had a pipe in his mouth, a bad temper and loved swimming. He was a happy person. he called me "Marshala"! He always said that when I was born g-d added a black one with Natalie. He loved baseball and listened to a static radio all night.

Never listened to music . He loved to rearrange the furniture. As soon as he would leave my mom moved everything back. He always said that when kids are noisy it means there happy. He did not believe in girls going to College. His favored child I think was Irene. He and Gene had terrible fights about everything. There was always a lack of affection to his children----somehow he wasn't comfortable with it. He took my mother everywhere with him----they swore at each other in yiddish. He cried the night Judy was born---so choked up when he came into me and Natalie's bedroom to tell us. There was more to him that he ever let on.
