About David E Schnell
Inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in Richmond, Indiana -- May 21, 2010
A 1985 graduate of Elkhart Central High School, Schnell was the named to the first team All-Northern Indiana Conference Team, UPI first team all-state, AP first team all-state and was named to the Bloomington Herald-Times Top 33 in both his junior and senior years. In addition, after his senior season, Schnell was ranked the No. 1 high school player by Sports Illustrated, Parade Magazine All-America first Team and Bally's All-America first team.
Schnell went on to play at Indiana University where he was a four-year letterwinner and the starting QB for three years. He remains the only IU quarterback to lead Indiana to victories over Ohio State and Michigan in the same season. He received honors as the MVP in the 1988 Liberty Bowl, Offensive MVP 1988 Liberty Bowl, Chevy Player of The Game by ABC Sports for his play in the Indiana vs. Iowa game in 1988 and the Corby Davis Mental Attitude winner in 1989. He played in the Japan Bowl in 1989.
Following his college career, Schnell signed a free-agent contract with the Buffalo Bills in 1990.
He loved family gatherings. Member of the Elk's Christiana Creek Golf Club. He was a big Chicago Bears fan and IU Basketball fan. He enjoyed fishing and water sports at his home on Long Lake and grilling out. He loved golfing and camping. David was an Assistant coach at Elkhart Central, and football coach at Northside Middle School. After college he worked with Chris Darling Insurance at Heritage Financial Groups. He is current owner of Berkey Insurance Agency.
