About David Witt

http://www.bfoov.org/ped/2055/npr2.htm

David Witt of Henry County, VA and his wife Sarah (Harbour) Witt were first cousins. David was the father of John Witt.

David and Sarah Harbour Witt had these children:

  1. Only one son, John Witt, who by his first wife, was the father of our Charles Witt (1775-1848 KY)
  2.  Mildred Witt Moore, wife of Benjamin Moore
  3.  Sarah Witt Smith, wife of William Smith
  4. Hannah Witt Dodson, wife of Lambath Dodson.

Per tradition, DAVID WITT was the son of William Witt, who died in 1754 in Albemarle County, current Fluvanna County, VA. This tradition appears in various publications to include page 336 Volume IV of The Compendium of American Genealogy by Virkus. The tradition's rationale as presented within Publication No 1 of the Huguenot Society Founders of Mankin is deemed faulty.

DAVID WITT was of indeterminable age. He could have been among the last born in the third generation as the son of William Witt d1754 or he could have been among the first born in the fourth generation as son of John Witt III or the son of the traditional William Witt, Jr, who was said to have married the equally traditional Mildred Witt, his first cousin and sister of SARAH WITT HARBOUR.

David's Will: "At a court held for Henry County... on the 27th day of June 1808, the within last will and testament of David Witt deceased was exhibited in court by Benjamin Moore and John Witt the executors therein named and proved by the of his subscribing witnesses. Executors John Witt and Benjamin Moore. The Will states "It is my wish and desire and I do hereby give to John Witt and Benjamin Moore, a Negro man named Jack to be divided equally between them and their heirs, I also give Abner Moore, a negro boy named John; The above mentioned negroes are to remain in possession of my wife Sarah Witt during her natural life and I give the balance of my property both real and personal to my beloved wife SARAH WITT to dispose of in any manner she may think proper. And I do by there present constitute and appoint John Witt and Benjamin Moore the executors of this my last will and testament.... "Signed David(his mark) Witt- witnessed by John Dillard, Jr and Thomas Harbour.
