Family researchers have indicated that the mother of William Perry DeSpain in NOT Nancy Skaggs despite several references as such.
Researcher Denise "Micki" Behl seems to have sought the answer to this relation for some time and has also found that, "WPD's death cert gives Peter DeSpain as father, but mother is left blank; the informant was his son-in-law William Nick Ward. Nancy (Skaggs) is not in Peter's household in 1830 or 1840 federal census nor is WPD in the 1840 federal census. Furthermore, there are no records to indicate where WPD was until 1856. SHe has also noted that, "there are records indicating WPD's birth as early as 1832 and as late as 1837...even being generous, Nancy would have been between 71 and 76 years old at his birth if she was born abt 1761.
We made the assumption that she was born after Dec 1770 since her father Henry gave consent [implying she was not "of age"] when she married Peter DeSpain 15 Dec 1791. Even with this assumption she would have been between 62-67 at WPD's birth. Certainly not impossible, but is unlikely."
