About Deacon John Baldwin

JOHN5, Israel4, Samuel3, David2, Joseph1

John Baldwin, son of Israel Baldwin and Hannah Chatterton (this may be INCORRECT, it may be Hannah GUNN), was b. c 1757 AND lived in New Milford, Conn., in that part of town known as Mount Tom. My account of him is in confusion, and seems inconsistent with itself. He. m. SUSANNAH BRISTOL. His widow and only surviving brother Abiel are his administrators, March 19?, 1803. He was, as Deacon John , killed June 10?, 1803, by the fall of a tree. His widow MERCY d. July 15,1823,, aged 64.

Children were: Mercy,Jr.(1785-1808,aged 23), Polly (1788-1872), Hannah (1788-1806), Samuel (1791), Susannah "Jr" (1794,m. Rev.Daniel Baldwin5), John (1796), and Bristoll (1799-1806).

Bristol, Hannah, and Mary are named in the Cemetery as children of John and Susannah. [The dates for the gravestone for Mary correspond with known data for the Mercy Jr.]

Note: Since Bristol is the last born, and is listed as dau. of John & Susannah, it would seem that he remarried after her death; prob. to the Mercy who would become his widow..No gravestone has been found for Susannah, the one found for Mercy is correct time frame ...1759 to 1823..to make her the one who survived John. An alternative would be that Susannah was nicknamed Mercy and the 2 are one in the same.
