About Deborah Avery

Daniel Avery and Deborah were cousins; his parents were Benjamin Avery and Thankful Avery, also cousins. Daniel was an Ensign in Capt. Gallop's company, in 1776 ("Connecticut Men in the Revolution", p. 452), and was killed at Fort Griswold. His tombstone bears the inscription: "In Memory of Ensign Daniel Avery who nobly Sacrificed his Life in Defence of Fort Griswold & the Liberties of America Sept 6, 1781 in ye 41st year of his Age. His widow and children each received a share of his estate which was divided Oct 2, 1792 (Stonington Wills, 6:463).
