About Dennis Donald Soucy

Dennis Donald Soucy (August 7, 1930 – November 2, 2013) was an American politician and businessman who served as the Mayor of Bangor, Maine, for three nonconsecutive terms: 1977-1978, 1982-1983 and 1993-1994. Upon his election in 1993, Soucy became the first person to serve three terms as mayor of the city in more than sixty years. He also simultaneously served on the Bangor City Council for six terms.

Dennis Soucy was born to parents, Frank and Mary Veilleux Soucy, in Bangor on August 7, 1930. Soucy had eleven brothers and sisters. He graduated in 1948 from John Bapst High School, which is now called John Bapst Memorial High School. Soucy worked for his family's bakery, Frank's Bake Shop, for several years after high school. He then founded his own business, Dennis "Don" Soucy Real Estate and Insurance.

In 1956, Soucy also founded a credit union, St. John's Credit Union, in the basement of the St. John Catholic Church. The original intent of the business was to serve the church's parishioners. Soucy's company, now known as Bangor Federal Credit Union, currently has more than 14,000 members, as of 2013. Soucy served as the President of the Bangor Federal Credit Union from its founding in 1956 until his retirement in 2008.

Soucy was elected to the Bangor City Council for six terms. He served as the Mayor of Bangor for three terms: 1977-1978, 1982-1983 (when he succeeded Paul Zendzian), and 1993-1994. (Mayors of Bangor are elected by the city council). Upon his election as Mayor in 1993, Soucy became the first man to serve three terms as mayor in more than sixty years.
