Diana van Madagascar

Born in 1664/65 at Madagascar. Baptism Diana van Madagascar was baptized on 17 June 1703 at Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town)

Concubine She may have been the concubine of Detlef Bibault from circa 1686 at de Caep de Goede Hoop. Diana van Madagascar is a strong candidate as mother to Susanna Biebou, baptised (23 February 1687). Susanna's recorded paternity is extraordinary compared to other contemporary baptisms for slave children - including those owned by Cornelis Linnes . A further clue to a possible continuous relationship between Biebow and Diana, would be his subsequent purchase of a slave woman also named Diana van Madagascar. Bibouw married (1688) so that his potential relationship with Diana appears to have remained de facto

Diana van Madagascar was sold by William Deeron, to Johann Heinrich Vlok on 5 May 1686 de Caep de Goede Hoop, for 48 Rixdollars.

Diana van Madagascar may have been the slave of Conelis Pietersz Linnes on 23 February 1687 de Caep de Goede Hoop mentioned in the baptism of Susanna, daughter of Diedelof Biebou en Diana, slavin.

Diana van Madagascar was sold by Jours van Stralen, to Christiaan Freser on 12 May 1691 de Caep de Goede Hoop, for 65 Rijksdaalders

Diana van Madagascar was sold by Christiaan Freser, to Detlef Bibault on 28 December 1693 de Caep de Goede Hoop, for 90 rijksdaalders.

She was a slave on 17 June 1703 at de Caep de Goede Hoop, owned by Francois van der Stel.3

Quote from http://www.eloff-family.co.za/All%20Families%20and%20Individuals/pafn159.htm

She was the slave of Cornelis Linnes, a senior officer of the DEIC and confidant of the governer Simon van der Stel.

On 12 May1691 Joris van Straaten sold Diana van Madagascar to Christiaan Freser for 65 rix-dollars.

On 28 Dec 1693 she was sold to Detlef Biebow for 90 rix-dollars and thus gained her freedom before he died Susanna ODENDAAL, ~ 9-1-1717, d.v.

Geslagregisters; A.S. Boëseken; Slaves and Free Blacks at the Cape: Giliomee en Elphinck; 'n Samelewing in Wording;J.L.M. Franken; Argiefjaarboek, 1978;Leo Fouche; Adam Tas se Dagboek, Van Riebeeck-Vereniging, 1970; Kronos Vol. 1, 1979.
