About Dora Malka Levin

A story from Rabbi Levin’s son-in-law, Harris and daugter, Dora:

One day Harris brought home a wounded Jewish soldier who told how, after being hit, he had taken refuge in a wooden shed. He had lain down inside, he said, hoping someone would come to help him. Later, two Confederate soldiers entered the shed. When they noticed the wounded man’s long beard they yelled at him roughly, “Get out of here you Goddamn Jew!” In pain, he closed his eyes and made no move, so they kicked him outside. The Jew managed to crawl some distance away before he collapsed. Just then a shell exploded on the shed, killing the two Rebels inside. Harris Levin, returning from guard duty, brought the injured Jew home for Dora to tend his wounds.

Levin, A.L., Dare to be Different (New York:Bloch, 1972)

An amazing vignette from "Dare to be Different":

Dora had never been completely reconstructed. The likeness of old Reb Hirsh Levin, garbed in prayer shawl and phylacteries, hung side by side on her parlor wall with an oil painting of Robert E. Lee. . . To little Minnie Levin, the dignified Confederate General seemed as much an ancestor as her grandfather, Reb Hirsh. ibid., pp 22-23
