Dr Joseph Lomza, a member of the Jewish Council in Lomza, committed suicide on 2 Novmber 1942, rather than cooperate with the Nazis.

This was on the 25th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration in support of a Jewish National Home in Palestine. The deportations finally came to Bialystok region, though not to the city.
