My Uncle Robert Courtney Leroy Yapp died in Shasta county on March 4 1946 at the age of 39 and is buried in the Redding Cemetary.
Until a few years ago after my dad died, I never knew much about my family. Now I am hoping that there might be some obituary information which would tell me more about the family.
I believe his wife was Iva Myrtle Yapp and she lived in the area up to maybe 1955 or so, but I don't know her maiden name or date of birth, or if they had any children.
Since she was still quite young when he died I suspect she may have remarried.
I don't know if such an obituary can be found there in the local libraries or not, but anything that can be found would be of great interest, or the name of someone who could do a lookup in the Shasta county area.

Greetings, There are a couple of choices for you:
1) You can request the Genealogy volunteers at the main branch library to check the paper for an obit, since you have an exact date of death. It may cost you a small amount, but they can do copies - http://www.shastalibraries.org/spl/index.php?ref=HowDoI/Obit...
2) I can look for the obit - it would be no charge, but I don't do copies, just transcribe, and it would take a little while for the library to send the film to my branch (once/week delivery of materials)
Let me know which you prefer to do.
BTW, there seems to be another person researching this family, as Robert is in someone's family tree on Ancestry. No spouse listed, but siblings are Lenora D. & Harry Golman Yapp. Their parents are listed as Harry Weston Yapp & Lulu H.T. Bowling. Of course, this is someone's research & you might want to contact them as to their sources.
Again, let me know if you want me to have the film sent up. Dee Burney ReplyReport AbusePrint Re: Looking for "Bob" ha1ha1 (View posts) Posted: 21 Nov 2010 1:11AM GMT Classification: Query Surnames:
Well, I guess I'll try to have someone look at the local libraries for now.
And yes, as a matter of fact, Harry Weston Yapp was my Grandfather. I was lucky enough to find an obit for him, but Robert has been much more elusive.
And thank you for the reply.

Harry,
My name is Karen Struve and I live in Colville WA. I am the president of our local Genealogy Society. There is a monument in the Stevens County Courthouse yard commemorating fallen servicemen from previous wars. On that monument is a Weston Eugene YAPP we believe was another son of Harry Weston YAPP. We have found evidence that Harry was married twice. He was divorced from Lulu around 1922 and married a woman by the name of Alice Kish. Weston E YAPP was their son. Although Weston is on the monument we are unable to find any evidence of his death in WWII. We do know he lived in the Springdale WA area when he enlisted in the service. Are you at all familiar with this man? Is he mentioned in your grandfather's obituary? Any information you could provide would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Karen Struve ReplyReport AbusePrint Re: Looking for "Bob" ha1ha1 (View posts) Posted: 1 Dec 2011 1:23PM GMT Classification: Query Surnames:
Yes, I believe he is indeed as you say. Weston Eugene Yapp died in the Pacific. He tended to go by his middle name Eugene more than Weston. I don't know what became of Alice nee Tish. She seems to have dropped out of the picture somewhere around 1935 in the San Francisco Bay area.

Do you have any other information on Weston Eugene's death? Exactly where and when he died or a or even where he was buried? Was he "lost at sea?" We are researching every name on our monument and trying to honor every one of those men. There is a series of articles being run in a local Stevens County newspaper and right now we are on the WWI casualties. You mentioned in a previous post that you have your grandfather's obituary. Was there any mention of Weston's death in that? We can't find any mention of him at all except that he graduated from Springdale High School 15 May 1941. That is in Stevens County, WA. The criteria for being on the monument was that the person must have lived in Stevens County at the time he/she entered the service. We have absolutely no record of him being brought back to Stevens County and buried here, but that wasn't a requirement for the monument. By the way, there is a mention in the Oakland Tribune of May 27 1937,in the marriages section, of an Alice M. Yapp of the same age shown marrying a certain Charles Kuepper. The Alameda County vital records office, however has no such record, so it is presumed it may have been in some nearby county Would it be possible to get a copy of Harry Weston Yapp's obituary from you? Thank you so much for your prompt reply. Karen

I am sorry not to have replied sooner, but events precluded it.
I believe the marriage you speak of was in Marin county.
When Winston Eugene Yapp went to join the service, it was discovered that on his birth certificate his fathers name was given as Tillman. So he joined under the name Tillman (his motner's first husband) instead of Yapp.
He preferred Eugene over Winston as his given name, and I have found some reference to a Eugene W Tillman from the Siskiyou California area who was killed in action that MIGHT be him. I am trying to track it down.

If you look a little further up in that Oakland Tribune article of 27 May 1937, you will see that the marriages and marriage licenses that are referenced are for San Rafael County.
