This generation is notable in two ways. Since Ebenezer's will is in the Archives of the State Library at Hartford, Connecticut; we know he and his survivors and attestors were using the Hanchett spelling. Why the extra "t"?
Could it be that Hanchet "smacked" too much of French when, during their lifetimes, the French and English were struggling for control all along the emerging frontier?
Secondly, this generation in general left the Suffield homestead environs and struck out on their own. Ebenezer is unique in two respects.
First, he had a lifelong association with the iron industry. He first moved to Canaan, Connecticut where he is referred to as "a bloomer of Canaan", and then to Salisbury, Connecticut. It was in Salisbury where Ebenezer, along with his brother Joseph and a brother-in-law Timothy Burbank (Esther), purchased Lamb's Forge which was the principal forge in Salisbury. There they forged the chain which was strung across the Hudson River to prevent British ships from going up river during the Revolutionary War.
Also, the men of Salisburyy founded settlements in Vermont. In fact, the town records of Middlebury, Vermont remained in Salisbury until 1783 and Ebenezer was elected a selectman of Middlebury several times.
Ebenezer married Sarah Fuller at Suffield on July 17, 1739. They had nine children. Amos, Ebenezer, Sarah, Lucy, Ebenezer, Hannah, Simeon, Ruth, and Jonah.
This generation also broke tradition in naming their children. No longer is the first born automatically named for his father and for her maternal grandmother.
