About Edmee dit Aimee Gautreau (Lejeune)

  • AKAN: Aimée
  • Nickname: dit Briard
  • Census: 1671; 1693 Port-Royal
  • Edmee is listed as a Metis woman, having been born in a Metis village, as well as having the title of "Sauvagesse".
  • Edmee is believed to be the daughter of Pierre Lejeune b. 1595 in France.

Regarding DNA

DNA Haplogroup U6A7a1. This is from the Iberian Peninsula area, although a mutation of it, this particular cluster evolved in Acadia 500 years ago. This indicates some degree of blood from there. There are multiple reasons this could be but none can be proven absolutely. She was born in a Metis village and raised as such, indicating she is Metis. The possible reasons for her mtDNA having the haplogroup:

  • Her mother's side may have a Basque woman on it at some point.
  • Her mother's side may have a Basque man whose mtDNA crossed over, as it does happen, albeit rarely.

Notes: mtDNA does not often cross over from the paternal line, though it can and does happen, albeit rarely. Basque women did not go on voyages with the men and the Basque never attempted to settle the area with families, thus causing the problems of how either is possible. It is likely we will never know exactly how this occured, and people will have their own theories.

Her records all come with the title "Sauvagesse" It's the feminine form of Sauvage, a French description of the native peoples, that translates in English as "savage."

Edmee's parents are unknown, though all that is known is thus:

  • She was born in a Metis settlement, and given the title of "Sauvagesse".
  • She has Portuguese ancestry from her mother's side.
  • Her mother likely was Metis herself, or else mostly Mi'kmaq with some Basque blood in her.
  • Her father is believed to have been Pierre Lejeune, a frenchman who is rumoured to have come with his family, including Edmee, though all records suggest he came alone and list Edmee as having been born in a Metis village in Acadia.
