About Edward Howe

Edward Howe was born Abt.. 1574 in London, England, and died April 1639 in Lynn, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth (Ancestry Unknown) in England.

Edward Howe with his wife and five children embarked on the "Truelove" for New England on the 19th of September, 1635. The names as they appeared on the list are as follows: Edward How, husbandman, aged 60, Elizabeth, aged 56, Jeremie, aged 21, Sara, aged 12, Ephraim, aged 9, Isaac, aged 7, William, aged 6.

Children of Edward Howe and Elizabeth are:

  1. Jeremiah Howe, born Abt.. 1614 in London, England; died November 16, 1690 in New Haven, Connecticut.
  2. Sarah Howe, born Abt.. 1623 in England; died Unknown.
  3. Ephraim Howe, born Abt. 1626 in England; died Unknown.
  4. Isaac Howe, born Abt. 1628 in England; died Unknown.
  5. William Howe, born Abt. 1629 in England; died Unknown.
  6. Joseph Howe, born in England; died Unknown. He married Elizabeth Needham died Unknown.

Joseph was born in England. We do not have proof but it seems quite probable that Joseph How was the son of Edward How of Lynn and that he came to this country at a later date. He was in Lynn as early as 1640. He married Elizabeth Needham the daughter of Edmund Needham of Lynn. This is proven by his will and that of Edmund Needham. From the Salem Quarterly Court that Joseph How agreed to go to sea on November 25, 1641. His widow married a second time to Samuel Hart. An inventory of his estate was taken August 1,1650 and amounted to 107 pounds.

On reaching this country, they settled in what is now known as Lynn, Mass. He was admitted freeman December 8, 1636. He was a man of much ability, of good report, and a highly respected citizen. He was chosen deputy to the General Court in 1638, and in the same year, his named appeared on the list of land-owners in Lynn, as having 210 acres. He died very suddenly in April 1639, and his widow was appointed by the General Court to administer his estate on May 22, 1639.

Of Edwards ancestry we have little information. It has been a long standing tradition in the family that he came from London, England, and there seems to be strong support in the foundation of this tradition. There may have been other Howes in Lynn prior to 1635 but little is know of them. Much of the information concerning the Howe families of Lynn are surrounded in vague traditions and suppositions, and it is largely owing to the fact that the records of Lynn, for the first sixty years are missing.

We do not know Elizabeth's last name or her ancestry. She was born in England about 1584. From the Genealogical Dictionary of New England Viol. II page 474 we have the death of Elizabeth as January 25,1672.

Came to North America from London in 1635.

Hotten's "List of the Early Emigrants" shows that Edward, aged 60; Elizabeth, aged 50; Jeremie, aged 21; Sara, aged 12; Ephraim, aged 9; Isaac, aged 7; William, aged 6 all embarked in the ship TRUELOVE, Joseph Gibbs, Master on Sept. 19, 1635.

He was admitted as a freeman in Lynn, MA on Dec. 8, 1636.

In 1638 he was chosen as Deputy to the General Court. This same year his name appeared on the list of Lynn landowners as owning 210 acres.

Winthrop's "History of New England" says:

One Mr. Howe of Lynn, a Godly man, and a deputy of the last General Court, after the court was ended and he had dined, being in health as he used to be, went to pass over to Charlestown, and being alone, he was presently after found upon the strand, being there (as it seemed) waiting for the boat, which came soon after.

It is unclear whether the entire article was time lined, but it is pretty well established that it was April 1639.

The entire genealogy for Edward, James, Abraham of Roxbury and Abraham of Marlborough are contained in one volume of "Howe Genealogies", published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Another volume contains the genealogy of John Howe.

Much help in the Howe section of this version was received from:

Family Tree Maker CDs Vol 1-0988 and Vol 1-5566.
