Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby was educated at Eton College, Eton, Berkshire, England.

He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1773 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Lancashire between 1774 and 1776.

He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1776 and 1834.

He succeeded to the title of 12th Earl of Derby [E., 1485] on 22 February 1776.

He succeeded to the title of 6th Baronet Stanley, of Bickerstaffe, co. Lancs [E., 1627] on 22 February 1776.

He gained the rank of Colonel in 1779.

He held the office of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1783.

He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1783.

He held the office of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1806 to 1807.

He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Lancashire between 1809 and 1831.
