About Edward William Bentley

Edward Bentley Dies Following Long Illness

Death came to Edward Bentley, age 71, a respected citizen of this community, last Tuesday about noon, following an illness of several years duration from an incurable malady from which he has suffered much. He had been bed fast for several months preceding his death, and had been unable to do much work for a long time before that.

Funeral services will be held for him Saturday afternoon at one o’clock in the Parowan East Ward Chapel, under the direction of Rev. Forsyth of the Cedar City Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Bentley was born in Chester, England, March 29, 1866, a son of Frederick and Mary Evans Bentley, and approximately the first 13 years of his life were spent in England. He with other members of the family came to America in 1879 on the steamship “Wyoming”, landing at Castle Gardens, New York. He came on to Salt Lake City and then to Parowan, where he has lived ever since. He married Margaret West, who died 28 years ago, and to them were born eleven children, eight of whom survive.

The deceased was a farmer and livestock man in a small way and held office in Parowan City and Iron County for about thirty years, being deputy sheriff and city marshal for a number of terms and constable and court balliff at other times. He held the last named office until ill health forced him to resign last year. He was always active in politics as a member of the Republican party and served as precinct chairman and secretary for the organization for a number of years. He was also a member of the building committee for the construction of the local Presbyterian Chapel.

He is survived by the following children: Edward W. Bentley of Provo, Utah, Ruby B. Thompson of California, Ray Bentley of Caliente, Clara B. Luke of Midway, Utah, Wesley Bentley, Pearl B. Bardino of Milford, Douglas Bentley and Lizzie B. Hall of this city, all of whom are here for the funeral. He is also survived by three brothers, Fred of Sanford, Colorado, William of Lewiston, Utah, and Charles of Parowan, and sister Mrs. Margaret Ann Holyoak of Great Falls, Montana, who was here for a month or two recently helping care for him and 21 grandchildren. _________________________________________________

Grandma said her dad's name as Edward William Bentley. All other documents that I have found have Edward Bentley, no middle name. Feel Grandma is correct, but have no additional documentation to back that up. Made Edward William the alternate name.
