About Edwin Uriah Judd
Co-founder of the Republican Party...
In response to repeal of the Missouri Compromise, which opened the West to slavery, Abolitionists saw the need for a new political party whose primary focus would be the complete elimination of slavery. Edwin U. Judd was a political leader, in his area of Wisconsin, of the Free Soil Party. (The main purpose of the Free Soil Party was to prevent the introduction of slavery in the West, that is, keeping the Missouri Compromise in place.) Other political parties of the time were mixed in their views on slavery, but a large number, if not a majority of the population and their politicians in that part of Wisconsin (specifically Fond Du Lac County, but quite prevalent elsewhere in Wisconsin as well)were fundamentally opposed to slavery. When the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed in 1854, they took the initiative and agreed to form a completely new political party, dedicated to abolishing slavery. The organizers knew they needed the support of the Free Soil Party, which was led and controlled in the area by Edwin U. Judd. He agreed and threw his entire support behind the initiative, and the result was the birth of our US Republican Party. (From "FindAGrave.com")
