About Edzard Willem Koning

Edzard, was like his brother Arnold Hendrik, an artist. In 1886, after high school, he attended the Royal Arts Academy in The Hague. In the autumn of 1891 Edzard travelled to Paris and lived here for 9 months in Montmatre. In the summer of 1892 he trekked through Normandy. In september 1892 he returned to the Netherlands, where he stayed for a short while in The Hague, whereafter he moved to Winschoten where he stayed until 1895. In the summer of 1895 he moved to the country estate of "De Steeg" near Rheden together with artist and graphicer Simon Moulijn (1866-1948). Moulijn taught Edzard the art of litography. After marriage to Alberdina Tonckens they moved to Scherpenzeel and were there until 1904.They then moved to Amersfoort in 1918, and in 1926 Edzard built a house on a piece of land in Voorthuizen which he and his brother Arnold Hendrik owned.

Edzard produced the illustrations for a book "De kleine Johannes" written by Frederik van Eeden, and a number of Verkade albums.

Edzard was a memebr of "Arti et Amicitaé, St. Lucas in Amsterdam and "Pulchri studio" in The Hague.He was a renowned painter and often found inspiration in nature.
