Listed in the 1830 Federal Census, Clarke, GA, age 60-70, wife age 50-60, a son age 20-30, a daughter or granddaughter under 5, 2 daughters or granddaughters age 15-20, and no slaves; also listed in Clarke County were Andrew Ward, age 20-30, John (John L. D. Ward, 8 names away from Elam), age 20-30, William W. Ward (next to John), age 20-30, and Leonard Ward, age 30-40. The ages of John and William, along with their proximity to Elam, indicates that they were likely his sons.

Not listed in the 1840 census; however, the 1840 Federal Census, District 261, Clarke, GA, lists John L. Ward with a newly acquired elderly couple, aged 70-80 and 60-70; Elam is indicated to have died between 1839 and 1849, and likely after the 1840 census was taken.
