About Elias Pitzer Williams

At the age of 16, Elias came to Oregon with his family. They were members of the Lost Wagon Train on 1853 that took the Elliot Cutoff. He settled in Lost Valley, in the Oregon Territory...purchasing property along Rattlesnake Creek. In 1858, at the age of 21 he married Almira A Russell who was from a family living in Lost Valley. They had two sons together, Joe and Rob. Almira died from smallpox in 1866, and in 1868 Elias married Gertrude Hutchison. They had nine more children together, and lived and farmed on Rattlesnake Creek all their lives. Like his father, Elias was said to be a devoted Baptist and a staunch Democrat. In 1909, with the help of his children and neighbors, he built and founded the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dexter, Oregon. The church, later named the Dexter Baptist Church, and the building are still in use today. He died in Lane County on May 11, 1921 at the age of 83, and is buried along with Almira and Gertrude in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, Oregon.
