Captain Elijah (Hoar) Hanson received the rank of Captain by preparing the local militia for problems with the British and possible Indians from Canada. Elijah was a farmer in Prescott when the town was named in 1822. He was one of 5 brothers. Elijah, William and Johnathan all changed their name to Hanson in 1818, while Elihu remained Hoar. The reason for the name change is purely speculative but some deal with Shadrach's involvement with Shay's rebellion.
