In 1861, she was a house servant for two wealthy Scottish ladies (sisters), Amelia and Rosina Stewart. She lived with them in Hove, very far from the rest of her family in Leeds. Perhaps for this reason, her sister and brother-in-law, newlyweds Emma and Robert Smith, lived at this time in nearby Brighton.
The name of one of Eliza's employers prompts the question: was there a special attachment to Rosina Stewart, or did she just like the name, since it is the name she gave her first daughter?
