About Elizabeth Ann Garnett (Rogers)
From a 1998 forum letter by Doug Garnett of the International Garnett Family Registry:
Subject: Descendants of Anthony GARNETT Date: Sat, 7 Nov 1998 11:08:46 EST
Welcome to the GARNETT-List and thank you for outlining the particular GARNETT family line that you are researching!
I'll also post this reply to the GARNETT-List@rootsweb since it might be of benefit and relevance to other people who are researching the GARNETT family of Virginia and Kentucky. Someone else on the GARNETT-List might be able to contribute further information about these GARNETTs that will expand our collective knowledge of this particular branch of the family.
Your line of GARNETTs is of special interest to me since I have also been compiling a comprehensive genealogy and family history for the GARNETTs of Essex County, Virginia (even though I am not myself a descendant of this particular line of GARNETTs).
The first two generations of this GARNETT family which you outline in your message corresponds very closely to the data that I have in my family registry files. I have an Anthony GARNETT [b. 1700 and d. in 1748] who married Mrs. Elizabeth [nee JONES] BOULWARE [widow of John BOULWARE]. One of their sons, John GARNETT [b. July 28, 1751, d. January 13, 1834] did indeed marry Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" ROGERS [1755-1838] in 1771.
So, thus far we are in close agreement about the early generations of this family line.
John GARNETT and "Betsy" [ROGERS] GARNETT had ten children according to my records:
- 1. John GARNETT Jr. [b. 1773];
- 2. Richard GARNETT [b. 1775];
- 3. Nancy GARNETT [b. 1777];
- 4. Frances "Fanny" GARNETT [b. 1783];
- 5. William I. GARNETT [b. 1785];
- 6. James T. GARNETT [b. 1787];
- 7. Sarah "Sally" GARNETT [b. 1791];
- 8. Robert W. GARNETT [b. 1795];
- 9. Mariah GARNETT [b. 1797]; and
- 10. Betsey GARNETT [b. 1799].
I mention all of these children because this appears to be the exact point where the family outline that you provide in your message diverges from the information that I have in my files.
Your family tree gives the birth date of James T. GARNETT as 1793 and his death date as 1840 in Fannin County, Texas. But the particular James T. GARNETT that I show as the son of John and "Betsey" Rogers GARNETT was born instead on February 23, 1787 in Virginia and died on November 15, 1870 at Trigg County, Kentucky.
Because of the large degree of discrepency between our respective data, Terry, I think we must be talking about two entirely different people with the name of James T. GARNETT.
The particular James T. GARNETT that appears on my database was married to Mary "Polly" BROWN on November 11, 1810. She was born in June of 1788 and died on August 11, 1869 at Trigg County, Kentucky [the same location as her husband]. Whereas your James T. GARNETT died much earlier in Fannin County, Texas and married a woman named Martha ROTAN.
On my database, James T. GARNETT and his wife Mary "Polly" BROWN had seven known children:
- 1. Fannie GARNETT who married Charles HUMPHREYS;
- 2. Susan GARNETT who married Isaac DABNEY;
- 3. Anthony GARNETT [b. 1819];
- 4. Henry GARNETT [b. 1821];
- 5. Charles Washington GARNETT [b. December 13, 1825] who married Nancy SHELTON;
- 6. Muscoe GARNETT [b. Oct. 8, 1827, d. June 18, 1888] who married Susan SAVILLS;
- 7. Monce GARNETT [b. 1828].
I have found no indication of a son named James T. GARNETT Jr. among the children of James T. GARNETT Sr. and his wife Mary "Polly" BROWN. There is also nothing to indicate that any of these GARNETT children or their parents migrated from Kentucky to Texas.
I conclude from all of this, Terry, that your James T. GARNETT Sr. [born in 1793 and died in 1840 in Texas] who married Martha ROTAN must have been descended from a different branch of GARNETTs living in Kentucky. Based on the information that I have, I don't think that he could have been the son of John GARNETT and Elizabeth Ann "Betsey" ROGERS nor the grandson of Anthony GARNETT and Elizabeth [JONES] BOULWARE.
Now, I have lots of questions for you! What was the source of the information that you have on James T. GARNETT and his wife Martha ROTAN? Have you been able to find them on any land, census, taxation, church, or probate records in Kentucky or Texas? What was the basis for your conclusion that James T. GARNETT Sr. was descended from John GARNETT/Elizabeth Ann ROGERS?
If you can outline any additional details that you might have already found regarding the other children born to James T. GARNETT Sr. and Martha ROTAN, or of James T. GARNETT Jr. and Sophronia Jane YARBROUGH, these collateral names/dates/places might trigger some links with other GARNETT families that we have hanging in our family trees.
In closing, let me thank you once again for subscribing to the GARNETT-List, Terry, and for taking the time and effort to post your family interests for everyone else on the List.
This is the point in my epistle where I jump up on my soapbox and deliver theweekly sermon to the assembled congregation.
The main purpose of the family lists @ rootsweb is, I believe, to facilitate the exchange and sharing of information among researchers working on the same family surname. Too many subscribers (in my humble opinion) stay lurking passively in the bushes...waiting silently for interesting and useful information to arrive on their doorstep. Through shyness or inertia, they don't participate or contribute to the group endeavour.
Even though you are new to the List, Terry, you have set a very good example to us all by proactively contributing information and publishing your particular areas of interest. Blessings upon you!
So endeth the sermon.
Welcome to the GARNETT family congregation in cyberspace. I think we can all be of help and support to you in your ancestral quest.
