About Elizabeth Andrews Pierce

The first and only child born to Benjamin and his first wife,Elizabeth Andrews, Elizabeth Pierce grew up in the two-story, wood-framed house that Benjmain moved the family into in 1804. Since Pierce had obtained one of the few licenses to have a tavern, or public house, the atmosphere was one of constant visitation and socialization within the community. Since taverns served as community forums, encouraging participation in local and state politics and often also hosted people passing through Hillsborough, the house/tavern was ever the site of meetings of both politicians and military personnel. As part of the household she, as well as her sisters, were constantly in the presence of those guests and indeed, many were drawn as much by the innkeeper's wares as spending an evening "agreeably in conversation with the General's daughters" before catching a stage to their destination.

It is undoubedly at her own residence that she met and later married the young JOHN McNEIL. He was b. Mar. 25,1784 in Hillsborough, New Hampshire. He d. in Washington DC on Feb. 23,1850; she d. Mar. 27,1855.

Children were: John Winfield Scott (2/17/1817-9/11/1837), Frances Maria (c1818), Benjamin Pierce (1/20/1825), and Elizabeth Andrews.
