About Elizabeth Conwell Rice (Beck)

Elizabeth Conwell, third daughter and fifth child of John Christian Beck and Elizabeth Ensminger, was born at Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana on 14 October 1833; Elizabeth, also known as Lizzie, died in her home at Myrtle Creek, Douglas County, Oregon, on 27 November 1916.

"My mother was one of the finest women that ever came into this old world of sorrow, pain and disappointment." - Charles William Rice

When Elizabeth was 6 years old, her family moved to a farm in Hancock County near Tioga, Illinois. In 1856 she married John Stamper Rice, a schoolteacher in Tioga, originally from Kentucky. The ceremony was performed at the home of Elizabeth's half-brother, Justice of the Peace Phillip Ensminger.

John Stamper Rice continued teaching school in Hancock County until the spring of 1863, when he and Elizabeth and their three children joined Elizabeth's father and his family in a wagon train headed for Oregon. Elizabeth's father, John Christian Beck, died of food poisoning en route, near the river junction where Huntington, Oregon is now. The Rice family homesteaded at North Powder, Oregon, and sold vegetables to the gold miners at Auburn.

In 1867, the Rice family moved to a rented farm near Salem, Oregon. Two years later they bought a farm three miles east of Sublimity, Oregon, where they lived for many years, until finally moving to Myrtle Creek, Douglas County, Oregon in 1883. John Stamper Rice died here in 1904. Elizabeth Conwell Beck lived on the farm for 12 more years, until she died at the age of 84.

Elizabeth's grandson, George Benjamin Rice, said, "I have two recollections of Grandmother Rice. One was her kindliness and patience with all her grandchildren, who loved to visit her; the other was the air of dignity and calm that enveloped her. She was never flustered in matters that bothered other people..."
