Her mother Sarah had converted as a child with her parents Jacob (also known as James/Jack and John) Nunes (Anglicised to Nunn) and Esther (nee Montefiore). Her Jewish father Horatio secretly wed his beautiful Hebrew Christian cousin Sarah in a Christian ceremony due to the hostility of his parents. However her mother died when she was a baby and Elizabeth was reared by her mother's relatives and later went to live with her great aunt Lydia (Leah) Montefiore who she remained close to all her life. She married her relative Thomas Montefiore Wyeth (Waith) who was also a Hebrew Christian.
