Evelyn Lawler Lewis was born 1930 in Alabama, attended Tuskegee on a track-and-field scholarship, and competed for the US at the 1951 Pan American Games. Injuries prevented her participation in the 1952 Olympics; at that time she was one of the top three hurdlers in the world. (1) She taught school, coached sports, developed physical education programs, and co founded the Willingboro Track Club (Burlington, NJ) in 1969 "for the girls - they just did not have anything. But by the end of the first year the boys wanted to become part of it and we said OK.". She retired In 1987 to Houston, Texas and was living there in 2003. (1).
