http://www.otal.umd.edu/~walt/gen/htmfile/1310.htm -------------------- No record of Ezekiel's birth has been found. Most sources say he probably was born in 1637 in Dorchester, although Abbott said he was born about 1635. Some writers doubted that Ezekiel was the son of Thomas, because very early writings said Ezekiel Sanford was the builder of the stockade fort at Saybrook. Carlton Sanford believed it possible that the builder was this Ezekiel, or perhaps an engineer of that name sent over from England. But Carlton Sanford was convinced that our Ezekiel was the son of Thomas of Milford, based upon the names of his children, and the fact that James Savage and the historian of Milford both considered him Thomas' son. In more recent times, Jacobus has also placed Ezekiel as the son of Thomas Sanford of Milford. Ezekiel's name does not appear in the vital, church, probate and deed records at Milford except in his father's will. Ezekiel son of Thomas may have lived in Hartford for a time. He had numerous relatives there, and Hartford was the earlier home of the Wakelee family. On 10 June 1663 John Kelly receipted to father-in-law Nathaniel Willett for his wife's portion from her father's estate; Ezekiel Sanford was one of the witnesses. The only other Ezekiel available for this record was the son of Robert Sanford, who was only 15 at the time. While it is not impossible that the younger Ezekiel signed as witness, it is more likely that the witness was a man of legal age. Ezekiel probably settled at Fairfield about the time of his marriage. Although the marriage and children are entered in the Fairfield records, Jacobus says that is not proof the marriage occurred there. In May 1668 Ezekiel Sanford of Fairfield was propounded for freeman, and he was made freeman at Fairfield in 1669. He appeared on the census of October 1669 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, CT: "A List of ye names of ye freemen of towne of Fairefield ... Ezekiell Sanford." On 16 January 1673/74 Ezekiel received a grant of land from the town of Fairfield. On 23 September 1681 he was mentioned as eldest son Ezekiel in the will of Thomas Sanford of Milford. The inventory of Ezekiel Sanford of Fairfield was taken 2 January 1684/5 amounted to L356. It mentions widow; eldest son Ezekiel; other son Thomas; daughters Sarah, Mary, Rebecca, Martha, and Elizabeth. Ezekiel was a tanner, and a large land owner, but had distributed much of the land to his children during his lifetime. His widow administered upon the estate, receiving 1/3 of the land during her life and L56 out of the personal estate. On 2 November 1697 the heirs of Ezekiel Sanford of Fairfield signed an agreement to distribute the estate. The heirs signing were: Ezekiel Sanford, Thomas Sanford, Cornelius Hull in behalf of Sarah his wife; Theophilus Hull, in right of Mary his wife; John Seely in right of Rebecca his wife; Martha Sanford (by mark); Elizabeth Sanford (by mark). Nathan Gold signed as clerk.
