I am told by my family that Fanny left Alexander Weir and went off to Johannesburg with her musician lover. Fanny herself was an outstanding pianist and had run away, leaving her husband and children. It is thought that she was killed in the Braamfontein Mine Explosion in 1896.

Alexander Weir Hyde married Frances (Fanny) Sophia Holmes Cawood in Grahamstown on the 25th November 1869. They were married (by Special Licence) in St George’s Cathedral by Rev J.M. Cotterill. The announcement in the paper read:

“Married (by Special Licence) on the 25th November (1869) at St George’s Cathedral, by the Rev J.M. Cotterill , Alexander Weir, son of the late Alexander Hyde, Esq. To Fanny Sophia Holmes, seventh daughter of the late Hon’ble Joseph Cawood of this city” Announcement was made on the 26th November 1869
