About Florence Courtenay

Florence Courtenay was the fourth daughter of Sir Hugh Courtenay of Boconnock. She married John Trelawny, son of Sir John Trelawny, Knight, and wife Blanche Powna. They had three sons - Walter, Alnath and Edward.

Florence was related to Edward, First and Last Earl of Devon. He died childless and unmarried in the Republic of Venice in 1556. Florence and her sisters became co-heirs of the family's noble estates, through his great-grandfather, Edward Courtenay's line. Wikipedia states that she was a distant cousin, but Betham and Collins state that she was his sister. On www.thepeerage.com, we find that she was the sister of an earlier Edward of Devon, who died in 1509. This earlier Edward is, indeed, the great-grandfather of the later Edward who died in Venice.

Children of John Trelawny and wife Florence Courtenay:

  • Walter Trelawny, eldest son and heir, married Isabel Touwse
  • Alneth Trelawny, to whom Catherine, Countess of Devon, in c. 1512 [3 Henry VIII], granted the bailiwick of Exitond, and the West gate of the city of Exeter, for his life; died without heirs.
  • Edward Trelawny, died without heirs
