About Fornatus Dustin

History of San Joaquin County, California, page 1143, under heading "Albert F. Rodgers"

"Mr. Rodgers' first marriage occurred at Elliott, California, in the fall of 1884, and united him with Miss Lilly Dustin, a native of San Joaquin County, California, born on the old Dustin ranch, a daughter of Fornatus and Rosaline (Call) Dustin. Fornatus Dustin first settled in San Bernardino County, California, and farmed there until 1858; then he went to Utah for a short time, but in 1859 returned to California. In 1861 he settled in Stockton, where he engaged in teaming for six years, and in 1867 settled on the place now occupied by Charles R. Dustin, his son, and a brother of Mrs. Rodgers, buying a squatter's title to 160 acres; but afterwards he lost his title to the railroad company, the company having won in the courts on a claim to the land. Then he paid for the land a second time, giving the railroad company $12.50 an acre."

Fornatus Dustin married Sonora Rosaline Call, February 2, 1845, in Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois. They were a part of the Mormon Overland Travel of 1847 - 1868. They were among the members of the Warren Foote Company of 1850. Fornatus was then 24, Sonora was 23. Their son Andrew Fornatus was 3 and son Oscar Cyral was 1. Also on the same wagon train were Sonora's father Cyril Call 64, his wife Sarah Tiffany age 59, their twin son's Homer and Omer age 16.

According to the Iowa, Pottawattamie County, Annotated Record of U.S. Census, 1850 for Fornatus and Sonora Rosaline, their children are listed as Fornatus Andrew, Oscar Cyral, Charles Roscoe, Elnora Rosaline, Calista Evaline, Delbert, Sarah Asenith, Arthur, Lilly Ellen, Mary Rosetta, Fannie Samantha.

According to the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, enumerated on June 15th, Fornatus Dustin and Rosline Dustin, 37 and 34 years old, are living in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah Territory, with their children, Andrew 13, Oscar 11, Charles 9, Elnora 7, Calista 5, Delbert 3, and Sarah A. one year old. Fornatus is listed as a Farmer, with real estate valued at $1,000 and $300 personal estate. His son Andrew was born in Iowa, as was Oskar, Charles in Utah Territory, Elnora, Calista and Delbert were born in California, and Sarah was also born in Utah Territory, so the family did move around a lot.

Anson Call (Rosaline's older brother) is listed on the same census page, age 50, with his wife Mary, age 48, and daughter Margaret, 20 years old. Also on the same page is Chauncey Loveland and his wife Sara, age 63 and 60, and their daughter Elvira, 31. Chauncey Loveland's daughter, Hannah, was the wife of Seth Dustin, Fortunatus Dustin's younger brother. Chauncey Loveland's son, Joel Loveland, and his wife Amanda, age 24 and 22, are next door with their one year old daughter Rhoda A.
