Sources of all the information that follows--Geni profiles and:
One needs to analyse the Wikipedia source cited above, because although it does in fact establish the mother of John Henry Parnell as the daughter of Richard Wingfield, 4th Viscount, we need to extract two of the sentences so we can see this clearly:
1) He [Charles Stewart Parnell] was the son of John Henry Parnell (1811-1859)
2) John Henry Parnell himself was a cousin of Ireland's leading aristocrats, Viscount Powerscourt ..
It certainly would have nice if our informant had said WHICH Viscount Powerscourt he meant. However since John Henry Parnell's dates are 1811-1859 (source: Wikipedia) and Richard Wingfield, 6th Viscount of Powerscourt's dates are 1815-1844 (source: Geni profile curated by Ofir Friedman), it seems clear that the cousin in question was the SIXTH Viscount of Powerscourt.
We now need a profile to link John Henry Parnell to his cousin Richard Wingfield, 6th Viscount of Powerscourt. We assert that "Mother of John Henry Parnell" is a suitable profile for this role. Why is she female, rather than male? Because if she were male, her son's surname wopuld be Wingfield instead of Parnell.
Next, Wikipedia says that John Henry Parnell was:
3) ... the grandson of a Chancellor of the Exchequer in Grattan's parliament, Sir John Parnell. This grandfather is appropriately placed (paternal, not maternal, side of the tree) because of his surname.
This concludes the analysis of Charles Stewart Parnell's ancestors. All Wikipedia Citations were taken from the first paragraph of the Family Background section. We will continue a discussion of his wife, his brother, and Charles Stewart Parnell on his own home page.
