Bartow died peacefully, after a long illness, Nov. 21, 2004, in New York City. He was 83.

A native of Southampton, N.Y., he attended St. Bernard's School and Kent School. While at Princeton, Bartow was a member of Ivy Club and played on the 150-pound football team. Dissatisfied with stateside teaching duty at Fort Sill, Okla., he requested combat duty and fought valiantly in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.

After the war, Bartow became a leading producer for some of Wall Street's best-known brokerage firms, including Harris, Upham; McDonnell & Co.; Oliphant & Co.; and Paine Webber. His prominence in his chosen field was such that he became the subject of a New York Times Sunday magazine article titled, "The Ups and Downs of a New York Stockbroker."

Bartow divided his time between Manhattan, where he was a life member of the Racquet and Tennis Club, and Southampton, where he belonged to the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Bartow is survived by his wife, Susan Andrews Farr; two sons, Reginald and Francis Bartow Jr., from his first marriage to Edith Fincke; three grandsons, Nicolas, Evan, and Alexander; and a brother, C. Sims Farr. To the entire family, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences.

Francis Bartow Farr

Francis Farr, of New York, a stockbroker who became one of the biggest producers on Wall Street during the 1960s, died peacefully on November 21, following a long illness. He was 83.

Born on July 22, 1921, he grew up in Southampton and Manhattan. He attended Saint Bernard’s School, The Kent School, and graduated from Princeton University in 1943. While at Princeton, he was elected to the Ivy Club, played end on the 150-pound football squad, and made All-American.

In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and, after proving himself a remarkably good shot in officer training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, was assigned to the teaching staff there. Subsequently, Mr. Farr requested combat duty, and fought valiantly in the Battle of the Bulge.

After the war, Mr. Farr became a leading producer for some of Wall Street’s best known brokerage firms, including Harris, Upham, McDonnell & Co., Oliphant & Co., and PaineWebber. During the 1960s, Mr. Farr’s prominence in the brokerage business was such that the New York Times Sunday magazine devoted a piece to him titled “The Ups and Downs of a New York Stockbroker.”

Mr. Farr loved people, life, and two places in particular: Manhattan and Southampton. He could always be found in one location or the other, unless pulled away by pressing business. In Manhattan, he was a life member at the Racquet & Tennis Club, and in Southampton, he belonged to The Bathing Corporation, The Meadow Club, and The Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, where he served as governor for many years.

He will be remembered by family and friends as a person possessing a buoyant personality who had great style and lived a very full and colorful life.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Andrews Farr; two sons from his first marriage to Edith Fincke, Reginald Farr and Francis Bartow Farr Jr.; three grandsons, Nicolas, Evan, and Alexander; and a brother, C. Sims Farr, of Manhattan and Charleston, South Carolina.

A graveside service will be held at Southampton Cemetery tomorrow, Friday, December 10, at noon, with a reception to follow at the Southampton Club.
