About Francis George Shaw

An influential philanthropist, Shaw inherited his father's wealth, enabling him to pursue his passions: social reform, the abolition of slavery, and politics. He spoke against slavery at every opportunity, and was influential in his son's (Colonel Robert Gould Shaw) acceptance of the colonelship of the 54th Mass. Inf., one of the first black regiments to see action in the Civil War. The famous and heroic assault of the 54th on Battery Wagner, S.C., while strategically a minor affair, became the death nell for the idea that a black man would not fight for his freedom. When he learned that his son was buried in a mass grave with his men as an insult, the elder Shaw remarked that he was proud of such a burial for his son.
