Francis came from Chelmsford, England, when a boy, and died about 1690. He had three sons, John, Simon and Francis. He was prominent in the Pequot War, receiving land for services in 1637 and 1643. He was a merchant in Ipswich. He obtained leave for his son Simon to build a house and ware-house in Haverhill in 1683. Simon immediately removed thither. This is the first mention of a merchant or trader in Haverhill.
