"This was the Reitz family, from that magnificent farm, Klip River, near Swellendam. They were already connected to the Duckitts in several ways. Daughters of their mother's brother, Dr. Jacob Versfeld, had married brothers of Francis William Reitz, himself married to Barbara van Renen, daughter of Dirk Gysbert van Renen, of the Old Brewery,

Newlands.

He had been Hendrik Cloete's partner in the whale-factory at Srandfontein and was a brother of Jacob of Ganzekraal. Francis William Reitz had a family of 12 children, and his daughter

Barbara

had married Mr Jan Coenraad Gie in 1854. ....... Francis William Reitz was the member for Swellendam and he used to bring his daughers, Aletta, Hannah, and Keetje with him to stay at the Gies

house

for the session. These girls were very friendly with Hilda, Lettie and Annie Duckitt.

Francis William Reitz was appointed Usher of the Black Rod. His son, also Francis William Reitz (who had married Blanca Thesen of the shipping family), had lost the Beaufort West election by a few votes and accepted a repeated invitation from the Orange Free State to become its Chief Justice. He afterwards became its Presidents. One of his younger sisters married W P Schreiner, later PM of the Cape Colony and brother of Olive, a great friend of Mary Cloete's daugher Mary. Young

Mary

Cloete married the Hon. J W Sauer in 1884........ Extracts from Quadrilles and Konfyt - by M Kuttel (Life & Journal of Hildagonda Duckitt) So... 4 daughters we know of .... leaves a few brothers to choose from out of 12!! Kind regards Lynn MacLeod
