He was the co-founder of the town Bethlehem, FS, and he named it as such for the area's likeness to the description in the Bible of Bethlehem's waving grasslands. There is still a little museum in the town dedicated to him; At the moment it is very rundown and many artefacts are at risk of being destroyed. He was an extremely religious man and left a written table behind containing not 10, but 21 commandments. This document, with his photograph in the middle, can still be found in many of his descendants' homes. Rumour has it that, at the Battle of Blood River, he was one of two members (the other being a Cilliers?) who refused to take the Covenant, on religious grounds.
