Frank Robert Pierce was the 2nd child born to Franklin Pierce and Jane Means Appleton Pierce. He was born August 27, 1839 but was one of a great number of victims to a typhus epidemic which spread through the state and died November 14,1843 at the age of of four.

A letter from Franklin to a friend relating the events of Frank Pierce's illness are on file with the Pierce papers at the NH Historical Society in Concord, NH...altho I have personally read this letter, I did not copy it. It was too heart-wrenching...
