The following was sent to me by Roberta Ellen Roller Nicholson a descendant of Frederick Hemmerich:
This article was taken from The Lutheran Messenger, Sunday, January 4, 1925, St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ithaca, Darke Co., Ohio:
"Frederick Hemmerich, the oldest son of Michael Hemmerich and his wife Catherine, nee Harbold, was born April 22nd, 1844 at Baden, Germany. He died December 21, 1924, at Pitsburg, Ohio, reaching the age of 80 years, 7 months, 29 days.
His early years were spent in Baden, Germany. In 1849 at the age of 5 years, he with his parents emigrated from the :Father Land, to the United States, settling in the state of New York. In 1855, Mr. Hemmerich being 11 years old, the family moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario. In 1857, Mr. Hemmerich being 13 years old, he attended school, but in 1959, 2 years afterwards, he was forced to give up his education and earn his own living. In 1859 at the age of 15, he left his father's house to face life's battles by himself. He migrated to the state of Ohio, and then soon after moved to Indiana and thence back again to Ohio, where he settled down to home life on a farm near Gordon, Darke County, Ohio, where he remained for a goodly number of years.
On October 7th, 1865, in Montgomery County, Ohio, he was married to Catherine Becker. To this union were 9 children (6 girls and 3 boys), William Hemmerich, residing in Gordon, Ohio; Sarah Harshbarger, residing in Ohio; Mary Miller, residing in Pitsburg, Ohio; John Hemmerich, residing near Gordon, Ohio; Rebecca Millikin, residing in Arcanum, Ohio; Margaret Kautt, residing in Farmersville, Ohio; Katey Thompson, deceased; Emma Millikin, residing in Detroit, Michigan; and Charles Hemmerich, deceased.
Although he could only receive a scantly education because of the inadequacy of the school equipment, through his tireless efforts and dominant will he educated himself sufficiently to be classed as a prosperous man.
In 1859, in Waterloo County, Ontario, Mr. Hemmerich was instructed in the doctrine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church by Rev. Wearth. However he never affiliated himself with the Lutheran Church until 8n 1909, when he was again confirmed in the faith in which he was baptized, by the late Reg. P.A. Peter. To this faith Mr. Hemmerich held until his dying day. I remember distinctly on one of my many visits to administer unto him I asked him whether he still believed that Jesus Christ was the Savior and he answered in a clear tone of voice,"yes". Mr. Hemmerich was a faithful and devout member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ithaca, Ohio. He attended divine services regularly up until he became bed-fast. He was a regular attendant at the Lord's Supper and in general was deeply interested in the affairs of the Church.
As a father he was kind, loving and considerate. He did everything possible in order that his children might start out in life as true Christians. He was an example for his family and for all those who came in contact with him, of an honest, kind, patient and Christian gentleman.
However, as is the way of all flesh, Mr. Hemmerich was stricken with a stroke of paralysis 3 years ago. This did not confine him to his be. He recovered, in a way, from this stroke, but 1 year ago another stroke came upon him. After this he was bed-fast. His condition gradually became worse, weakened his system and sapped his strength and finally at 2:00 Sunday morning, December 21st, he fell asleep, to awaken at the last day, by the call of his master.
He bore his affliction patiently as every true Christian does. This he could do for he called upon the Lord in the day of trouble and the Lord delivered him and for this great comfort Mr. Hemmerich glorified him through the staunchness of faith.
He leaves to mourning his death besides his children, 3 brothers, 3 sisters (1 brother and 2 sisters having preceded him in death), 23 grandchildren (2 preceding him in death) 8 great grandchildren (1 preceding him in death) and many more relatives and friends.
His family extended their hearty appreciation to their many friends who so willingly aided and comforted them during their hour of bereavement."
