Gaspar Vaught, s/o John Paul Vaught and his wife Maria Catherina was b about 1725 in Germany. His name was possibly Johnan (nes) Gaspar Paulus Vogt.
Gaspar was only age 19 when his father and brother went to Williamsburg to give their oath. Since it was necessary to be age 21 to give oath, he did not join them.
Gaspar married about 1745-50, when he was about age 20-25. Item (7) above yields the name Elizabeth as Gaspar Paul's wife. She is Elizabeth Wilkiss. The document "Virginia Vital Records From Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, the William and Mary College Quarterly and Tyler's Quarterly", indexed by Judith McGhan, has in a baptismal record a John Casper Vogt b 5 Dec 1763. The parents were John Casper Vogt and his wife Elizabeth nee Wilkiss. Sponsors were Jacob Arkenbrecht, Peter Mueller, and Catherine Margret Vogt. This baptismal record was from a church near Hermann's Mill in the province of Peaked Mountain, VA. Also there was a daughter, Sarah, b 28 Nov 1761 to John Casper Vogt and his wife
Elizabeth. Catherine Margret may have been the widow of John Paul Vaught or a daughter of Andrew. Evidence has been located in various records to indicate that probable sons of Gaspar are Adam and Paul. Possible sons are Joseph, Martin and Leonard.
Gaspar Vaught and his wife Elizabeth sold 270 acres of land in Rockingham Co., VA 12 Sep 1778 to Samuel Bear for 370 pounds VA money. This was land patented to Gaspar in 1768. On 10 Jun 1779 for 300 pounds VA money, Gaspar sold 67 acres to Michael Tanner. (See Chalkley item 4 above). This was part of the 400 acres deed to John Paul Vaught by patent 20 Feb 1745, and was bounded by land owned by Christian Clemans and a Mr. Grubb.
The Rockingham Co. land sales had to be signed by Gaspar's wife Elizabeth. Men from the county seat went to her home to get her signature as she was not well enough to travel. This could indicate that she died before Gaspar moved to the headwaters of the James River.
In Botetourt Co., the next county south of Rockingham Co., on the headwaters of the James River, Gaspar was taxed 1780-1787. Gaspar Jr. was only 17 when the move was made to Botetourt Co., VA. Deeds for land on the Greenbrier River are recorded in Botetourt Co. In Dec 1796, a Faspar Faut d in Greenbrier Co. Greenbrier was formed from Botetourt Co. and Montgomery Co. in 1778. The inventory of the estate was recorded in Jan 1797. The inventory was very small, no even large enough to indicate a wife or children, and too small for references of any settlement to be recorded. If this was Gaspar Vaught Senior the estate would have been much larger. Therefore, this Gaspar was probably "John Casper Vogt, Jr.", On 27 Sep 1797 a Rachel Vaught m Jacob Johnston in Greenbrier Co. She may have been Gaspar Junion's widow or a sister.
There was another Gaspar Vaught, who d before 1753. See item (8) above. This is not the s/o John Paul Vaught as indicated by the items (1), (2), (4), and (9) above. Items (1) and (4) above indicate that Gaspar, s/o John Paul, was not only alive in 1761 but still alive in 1779. Tax records 1780-1787 indicate that Gaspar may have d after 1787.
It is thought by some that the Gaspar Vaught in Pu.Co., KY in 1810, who d there about 1832, was the s/o John Paul Vaught. If this is so then he was 107 years old when he died. This is possible but not likely. The Pu.Co.,KY census of 1830 shows that the Kentucky Gaspar was b 1740-50. He would have been age 80-90 when he d, which is much more believable. The Kentucky Gaspar's wife was also named Elizabeth. Andrews and Gaspars, all with wives named Elizabeth, leads to much confusion. However, the Gaspar who d prior to 1753, and the Gaspar (s/o John Paul Vaught) who d after 1786, and the Gaspar who d in Kentucky ca 1832, and the Gaspar b 1763 who died in Greenbrier Co., would seem to be four different Gaspar Vaughts. A 1790 Wy.Co. VA petition to make changes in the county, is signed by a Gaspar Vaught and a Gaspar Vaught, Junior. This might indicate father and son, but could also simply mean an older Gaspar and a younger Gaspar. In 1790 only 2 of the 4 Gaspars are living, the Gaspar s/o Andrew and the Gaspar s/o Gaspar, i.e. first cousins. At that time Montgomery Co. extended up to Greenbrier Co. We believe that the so-called Wythe Co. petition included some petitioners from Montgomery Co., hence Gaspar Faught Jr.
In 1774, a Gaspar Vaught had 300 acres on the New River. In the 1780's, a Gaspar Vaught had land on the North Fork of the Holston River, VA. Christley also had land there. In 1782, a Gaspar Vaught is on the Montgomery Co., VA, tax list. This would have been Gaspar who went to KY and who was a s/o Andrew.
In 1782, a Gaspar Vaught was in Captain Baird's Company. This was probably the Gaspar b in 1763 who was a s/o Gaspar Senior.
Notes from the book "There Was A Gaspar In The Family" Vol 2 by Helen Spurlin and Mickey Martin. Contributed by The Vaught Association.
No probates or land settlements have been found for Andrew or his brother Gaspar Faught, sons of John Paul Vaught. To list the children of both takes some guesswork. There is no evidence that Andrew's brother Gaspar or any of Gaspar's children ever moved to this southwestern part of VA (Smyth Co.)
Gaspar Vaught, son of John Paul and Catharina Vaught was b ca 1725 in Germany. The given name has appeard as John Gaspar, Casper, Gasper, etc. Gaspar was only 19 when his father, John, and his brother Andrew, went to Williamsburg to give their Oath. Since it was necessary to be 21 to give Oath, Gaspar did not do so. Therefore, his birthplace in Germany is not known. Gaspar married Elizabeth Wilkiss ca 1754. Gaspar lived near North River as did his father. Gaspar sold his land in the Shenandoah Valley in the 1770's. Gaspar and Elizabeth sold 270 acres 12 Sep 1778 to Samuel Bear for 370 pounds. This was land patented to Gaspar in 1768. On 10 Jun 1779 for 300 pounds, Gaspar sold 67 acres, part of the 400 acres deeded to John P. Vaught by patent 20 Feb 1745, and bounded by land owned by Christian Clmens and a Mr. Grubb. (see Chalkley, item 4 above).
In 1780 Gaspar moved south to a German Community in Botetourt County, VA on the headwaters of the James River. Gaspar had land by the Cowpasture River and was near Spreading Spring Church neighborhood. Tax records in Botetourt Co., VA 1780-1787 indicate that Gaspar died after 1787. There is no way that the "Gaspar Vaught, deceased" referred to in Chalkley item 7 above can be Gaspar Vaught son of John Paul Vaught.
It is surprising to note that today, in general, this branch of the family spell the surname as "Faught" with an "F".
Nine children of Gaspar and Elizabeth follow: Martin Faught, Paul (or Powell) Faught, Adam Faught, Sarah Faught, Gaspar Faught, Leonard Faught, Barbara Faught, Elizabeth Faught, George Faught.
He was married to Elizabeth WILKISS between 1738 and 1763 in Germany ?. Elizabeth WILKISS was born Unknown in Germany ?. She died Unknown in Germany ?.
